The MeDIAWise Trust

Set up in 1993 by 'victims of media abuse', journalists and media lawyers, MediaWise exists to promote high standards in journalism. The Trust achieved charitable status in 1999 and is entirely independent of commercial interests and the state.

We provide:

  • free advice to those with complaints about the UK media;
  • use-of-the-media training for voluntary organisations;
    ethics training for journalists, worldwide;
  • opportunities for dialogue between media professionals and the public:
    Refugees, Asylums-seekers and the Media Forum London, 2001
    Access to the Information Society Bristol, 1998
    Ethnic Minorities and the Media Forum London, 1997
    Child Exploitation and the Media Forum London, 1997

Our guiding principles:

  • freedom of the press is a responsibility exercised by journalists on behalf of the public, not a licence to make money out of others misfortune
  • journalists play a vital role in sustaining democracy by providing civil society with accurate information and access to a variety of opinions: members of the public are right to expect accurate information from the mass media
  • inaccuracies should be promptly and prominently corrected, with appropriate redress for those damaged by unfair coverage.

MediaWise also undertakes international research and training projects works in partnership with NGOs, UN agencies and the International Federation of Journalists. Recent co-publications include The Media and Children's Rights (1999) with UNICEF and Spot On! Hand book for Health Communications (2000) with WHO.
